Details

The Architecture in Rome Program (AIR) is a highly-regarded architecture and design program of the University of Washington. In existence in Rome since the early 1970’s, the program is based in the center of Rome at the University’s unique studio and residential facilities located in the restored Palazzo Pio, on Campo dei Fiori.

Nancy and Stephen each served separately for one-year assignments in Rome and Seattle as a salaried teaching assistant to the Director and founder of the program, Astra Zarina, Professor Emeritus of the University of Washington. As undergraduate architecture students at the University of Washington in the early 1980’s, each had previously studied for nine months in the Architecture in Rome program. The program taught students to understand history through careful observation of the built environment, to design a contemporary building within an historic setting, and to speak basic Italian.

The lessons learned in Rome and Seattle through this remarkable program have remained vital for Nancy and Stephen in their architectural work and in their efforts to preserve architectural and cultural heritage.
