Nancy Josephson is past President of the Board of Directors of this 375-unit cooperative housing complex known as The Cherokee, a National Register and New York City historic landmark located in Manhattan. The Cherokee was originally constructed in 1909 and is composed of a remarkable series of elegant courtyard buildings, focusing on natural lighting, ventilation, and beautifully detailed architecture. Nancy and Stephen led the initiative to restore the Cherokee in keeping with its original historic character and to maintain and repair (rather than discard) many of the original features of this grand New York City landmark. Nancy also formed the Cherokee Garden Committee to organize residents in the design and landscaping of the historic exterior stairwells, courtyards and surrounding street trees on Cherokee Place, East 77th Street and East 78th Street. Nancy and Stephen also restored an apartment at the Cherokee in harmony with its original character.
