Stephen Day is a member of the Board of Directors of The Civita Institute, originally known as the Northwest Institute for Architecture and Urban Studies in Italy (NIAUSI), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization established in 1981. NIAUSI was originally founded by Astra Zarina and other faculty of the University of Washington, along with prominemt members of the Northwest art and design communities, focusing on cultural exchange and grounded in the exploration of design, architecture and art. This unique organization owns and operates a facility located in the ancient Italian Hilltown of Civita di Bagnoregio. Current projects emphasize the development of educational programs and a research facility, fellowships and artist residencies, furthering the mission of exploring architectural, artistic and cultural connections between Italy and the United States.
